The ROMM procedure is not recommended unless the only remaining site of cancer is confined to
the lungs. Typically candidates are patients in whom cancer started somewhere else and yet
was eliminated from the original site, by either surgery, radiation, or chemotherapy. Patients
in whom the only site of recurrence consists of lung nodules are potential candidates for removal
using the ROMM approach.
Surgery to remove lung nodules has been shown to extend survival and/or cure patients with the
following tumor types:
1.
Osteogenic sarcoma or chondorsarcoma of childhood
2.
Renal cell carcinoma
3.
Colon cancer
4.
Melanoma
5.
Certain soft tissue sarcomas
